To encourage high performance standards the MMTA sponsors Piano Contest Preliminaries in each district of Minnesota in January and Febuary with Contest Finals in March. This is a competition for music students where they perform in age-based categories and receive a critique from an accomplished adjudicator.
Several students from Hamlin Music Academy will be participating in the Northeast 2017 Vocal & Instrumental Preliminary Contest sanctioned by the Arrowhead Music Teachers Association (AMTA) and the Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MMTA). This year's contest will be held at the College of St. Scholastica (Tower Hall). A map of the St. Scholastic campus is available here.
Statewide more than 3,300 students enter the piano contest annually. Pianists with the highest scores in piano contest finals are selected to perform in ensembles at the Honors Concert in May or June at the Minneapolis Convention Center. This concert has grown into a gala event involving 700 young performers on 20 grand pianos.
